Pirates, a cursed sorceress, a talking rat. Went down very easily and left me smiling.
Twelve seas of different coloured spores that react to water. Only Sanderson would build that and then make it rigorous. Delightful.
The narrator's asides are great about eighty percent of the time. The rest they slightly interrupt the momentum. Lovely book regardless.
You need zero background. It's standalone, it's funny, and Hoid as narrator is a delight. Tress herself is wonderfully practical — she solves problems by thinking, which is rarer than it should be.
A girl leaves her island to rescue the boy she loves, across seas made of spores that kill you. The narrator is doing a Princess Bride thing and pulls it off completely. Charming from cover to cover.
