I tried to read this in a weekend and it resisted. One or two a sitting is the right pace and then it opens up completely.
Not a showy collection. It creeps up on you. I liked it more three days after finishing than I did on the last page.
Classic Erdrich territory — families, land, the way the past keeps arriving unannounced. The title story is extraordinary.
These stories move between the wry and the devastating without ever announcing the shift. Several of them are barely ten pages and contain a whole life.
