The highest compliment I can pay a book about books. Serpell's own prose is a pleasure throughout.
You'll get much more out of it having read at least three or four of the novels. Worth doing the homework.
This is what literary criticism should be, argumentative, beautifully written, and generous to the reader who hasn't read every book under discussion.
Rigorous, personal, and completely unwilling to flatten Morrison into a saint. The chapter on Beloved sent me straight back to the novel with new eyes.
