The highest compliment I can pay a book about books. Serpell's own prose is a pleasure throughout.
You'll get much more out of it having read at least three or four of the novels. Worth doing the homework.
This is what literary criticism should be — argumentative, beautifully written, and generous to the reader who hasn't read every book under discussion.
Rigorous, personal, and completely unwilling to flatten Morrison into a saint. The chapter on Beloved sent me straight back to the novel with new eyes.
