No big shocks, just an accumulating sense of wrongness. That's much harder to do and she does it well.
The first hundred pages are patient. Once it grips you it does not let go. Very atmospheric.
Four hundred pages that felt like two hundred. The translation is excellent — the voice comes through completely.
After Butter I would read her grocery list. This one has the same interest in hunger as a way of understanding a person, and the same slow, unnerving build.
