Ferocious is the word. Compact and unsettling and very hard to shake.
Groff asks you to keep up and doesn't explain. A couple of the stories stayed opaque to me even after a second read, but the ones that landed, landed hard.
You can open this at random and find a line worth underlining. It's the kind of collection that rewards reading one a day rather than tearing through.
Nobody writes physical intensity like she does — bodies, weather, appetite. These stories are short and they hit like a shove. The title piece in particular.
