Elston's narrators always feel like people rather than plot devices. That's what lifts this above the pack.
The courtroom material never gets bogged down and the tension outside it is sustained beautifully. One of the better thrillers I've read this year.
Every time I thought I'd worked out who was lying the ground shifted. Not flawless — a couple of the supporting characters are thin — but the central puzzle is very satisfying.
Picked this up on the strength of First Lie Wins and it has the same quality — a plot that keeps folding back on itself without ever cheating. Read it in two long sittings.
