Not much happens and that's the point. Nice to read a fantasy where the stakes are a community institution rather than the fate of the world. The wizard grows on you.
The water went cold and I stayed in. Agnes's lists, the landlord's terrible attitude, the slow reveal of what the shop is actually running — it all clicks. Immediately bought a copy for my sister.
This is a book where the biggest threat is a lease renewal and honestly? Perfect. The romance is slow and grumpy and very satisfying. Only note is that the middle sags a bit while the shelter logistics get sorted out.
If you loved Emily Wilde you already know the voice — precise, dry, secretly enormous-hearted. The magic shop downstairs is such a good engine for the plot. And the cats are actual characters, not set dressing.
1920s Montreal, a cat rescue, and a wizard who is deeply annoyed to be helping. I would like to live inside this book. Agnes being relentlessly type-A while everything around her descends into magical chaos is a joy from start to finish.
